November 7th - Graduate Schemes
Posted on Friday, 8 November 2013
Many students will be slogging away at graduate scheme applications as I speak. It is a long, lengthy process which takes anything between 3-6 hours. And it kind of sucks the life out of you. Like a Vampire. You apply, you take ages planning and writing your application, you fill out all of the boxes and rack your brains trying to think of unique and different ideas. And no. Sorry. No. Rejection.
This is particular hard when you know no one has looked at your application. Imagine completing that long test and then being presented with a maths test, vocal reasoning test and a logics test. If you fail one, you automatically get rejected from the programme.
It's quite harsh. It's very harsh actually. Also it is really demotivating. You start to think, what was the point? What was the point in all my work experience? The sports clubs I joined, the committees are participated in, the campaigns I helped? What was the point in my voluntary work? Because clearly these companies don't give two sh*ts about it.
Rejection is a hard pill to swallow. Even when it is with a company you don't actually want to work with. And at this point in your final year, you are expected to continue applying no matter what and still do all your work. Why? Do these companies realise how much of your life is wasted on these graduate scheme applications? Too much. Too much time indeed.
