November 10th - Remembrance Day
Posted on Monday, 11 November 2013
Remembrance Sunday. A day where we all
remember those who have died fighting and think of those who are still fighting
for our country. It is a beautiful tradition and one I wish more countries
would adopt. I was so shocked last year when I lived in the US. No one had
heard of wearing a Red Poppy from the beginning of November till the 11th.
You pay £1 and get a poppy, which you pin onto your clothing.
It was a bit disappointing to see that no
one really wore their poppy this year. Everyone got fully into the Halloween
spirit and spent lots and lots of money on costumes but many people could not
be bothered to spend a pound on a poppy.
Remembrance Day was a beautiful occasion,
attended by the Queen and the monarchy. One again, I was bit disappointed that
some newspapers didn’t focus on the symbolic meaning of the day and the
dedication and bravery of our soldiers, but instead focused on how curly Kate’s
hair was and how many times she played with it. I love Princess Kate. I really
think she is the most perfect English woman, but, not quite the person to focus
on on Remembrance Day.
I really enjoyed the cutest video. A young
girl who sang for the occasion was shocked when her father, who had been
serving for the British army abroad, suddenly walked onto stage. The video
makes me cry so I’ll put it below. She runs and bursts into tears as her Dad
picks her up. All the girls she was singing with were also daughters of army
men serving abroad and I felt rather sorry for them as they looked around
expectantly for their own father to appear. It must be awful. Such a
heartbreaking thing to have to go through, to see you Dad leave and go off to a
strange country where he could potentially be in danger. I have so much
admiration for these families. No only admiration for the brave men who fight
but for the families who are left behind.
So I raise my glass to them and wear my Red
Poppy proudly.
